Create equity & belonging for birthers of color

Racial disparities in food insecurity persist during pregnancy and beyond

The early postpartum period is known to public health professionals as the "fourth trimester," since it is an especially sensitive time in the development of a newborn, and the growth of a family. Change and stress do not disappear after the birth of a new baby--the physical and emotional changes brought about by birth and life with a newborn can be overwhelming.

All new parents need support during pregnancy and the postpartum period, but this is especially true for Black and Latinx parents. According to the San Francisco Health Improvement Partnership, 1 in 5 Black and Latinx families in SF experience food insecurity during pregnancy and after delivering, while almost none of their white counterparts do.

Every pregnant person, and each new baby, deserves access to the healthy food their family needs to be well. We cannot stand by as expectant parents and newborns in our community face food insecurity.

In June 2021, we welcomed our first cohort

of Nourishing Pregnancy participants

Nourishing Pregnancy is our new program that supports Black and Latinx birthing parents in San Francisco and their families with weekly healthy grocery donations, online cooking classes, and peer-support sessions during pregnancy and the postpartum period. All told, each Nourishing Pregnancy family spends six months in the program building up their food security and creating healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Through weekly grocery donation deliveries, food education, and community building, Nourishing Pregnancy improves families’ access to healthy food, cooking confidence, and social support. This program is key to 18 Reasons’ ability to fulfill our vision to create equity and belonging through the power of home cooking.

This project is a partnership between 18 Reasons, the nonprofit POC doula community SisterWeb, the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the Anthem Foundation, and the Bi-Rite Family of Businesses. All of these organizations are passionate about community health and the well-being of families of color in our community.

You can be among the first to support this project by making a donation

We keep Nourishing Pregnancy free for low-income families thanks to the support of donors like you who believe that every birthing parent and each new baby deserve the support they need to live healthy and free of hunger. It costs $5,000 to put a family through this six-month program, but it’s impossible to put a price on a healthy start to life for a child in need.

Support Nourishing Pregnancy with a donation to help us reach as many low-income families who need our help to access healthy food as possible.

What inspired this project

Executive Director Sarah Nelson and Program Manager Briana Tejuco are two moms passionate about community, birth, babies, and caring for new parents. Both share a dream of someday becoming doulas, perhaps as a "retirement career," and the next thing we knew, Nourishing Pregnancy was born. We can't wait to watch our baby grow.
